Job description
We are currently partnering with a Council in the West Midlands, who are recruiting for a Head of Grounds Maintenance to join their team on an interim contract for three to six months.
This is a full time position with a daily rate of £500 per day, inside IR35 via an umbrella company, and the start date is immediate.
The candidate must have extensive senior management experience in grounds maintenance, with strong leadership, budget management, project delivery, and stakeholder engagement skills.
Duties will include (but are not limited to):
Responsible for the operational management, control, direction and development of Grounds Maintenance and to ensure the delivery of effective, efficient and high quality services
Ensuring effective utilisation of human and financial resources and to improve efficiency, value for money and remain within budget
Holding overall responsibility for the operational management and development of the Grounds Maintenance within the Street Scene Portfolio which includes Recycling, Nature Conservation and Sustainability, Grounds Service Management, Contract Management and Compliance, Landscape Practice Group, the Golf service and any relevant Direct Service Provider (which currently includes Floral Enhancements, Constituency Grounds Maintenance, Golf Course Maintenance)
Effectively performance manage and monitor the operational functions within the service and ensure KPIs and targets are met which are aligned to the City’s strategic aims and objectives
Experience required:
Extensive operational background at senior management level, including the management of significant budgets, employee relations, staff development, and performance management
Proven track record of working directly with elected Members in a political environment
Direct experience of leading and delivering significant project management initiatives
Strong ability to manage conflicting demands, prioritise effectively, and deliver to tight deadlines
Experience of working constructively with Trade Union colleagues
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare and present reports to a wide range of audiences
Competence in planning, managing and implementing complex projects from inception through to delivery
Proven IT skills with the ability to use digital tools effectively to support service delivery
Ability to identify and respond appropriately to sensitive and complex political service issues
Experience of representing a service or organisation externally to stakeholders, partners, and professional bodies
Commitment to delivering excellence in all aspects of service delivery
Evidence of continuing professional development, demonstrating a proactive approach to learning and improvement
Awareness and commitment to promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace and across service delivery
Commitment to customer service, staff appraisal processes, and business transformation initiatives
Working hours:
37 hours per week
Monday – Friday
Home based role, requirement to travel to sites across the West Midlands regularly
