Governance Manager

Our client, based in Dartford, is currently recruiting for a Governance Manager on a three month fixed term contract covering for maternity leave, with a permanent opportunity at the end of the contract for those who are interested. Our client are proud to be a leading housing association, providing over 20,000 homes in the South East.

The position is due to start immediately on a full time basis with hybrid working, with a minimum of two days within the office. The salary is up to £49,000 based on experience for this position.

The ideal candidate will have Company Secretary or Governance experience in the public or not-for-profit sector as well as a sound understanding of regulatory environment and legal requirements of the social housing sector.

Duties will include (but not limited to):

  • Monitoring governance and regulatory compliance, identifying and reporting on areas of concern to the Director of Governance & Compliance and ultimately to the Executive Team Carrying out HMO inspections and dealing with enforcement work where necessary
  • Coordinating all regulatory enquiries and requirements, responding to tenant complains and negotiating with Private Sector Landlords
  • Submitting all corporate returns and statutory filings on behalf of the organisation and its subsidiaries Investigate empty homes and intervened to bring them back into use
  • Acting as a central point of contact for, and managing all operational matters relating to, Data Protection, Whistleblowing, Bribery Act, Anti-fraud, Section 20 and Consumer Credit Licence
  • Managing the Board and Committee calendars and work plans, providing an effective support service including overseeing all associated secretariat and administration
  • Supporting the wider business in all mergers and acquisitions from initial information gathering through to ensuring probity is maintained; also ensuring best practice from both organisations is adopted
  • Supervising the Declarations of Interest exercise and oversee the maintenance of Board and Committee records and statutory registers
  • Deputising for the Director of Governance & Compliance for guidance of the Board in the execution of its tasks. Including updating company rules, standing orders, terms of reference and codes of governance and, in particular, act as the Data Protection Officer and Company Secretary in their absence
  • Managing the induction process for new Board members as well as coordinating the annual Board strategy day
  • Ensuring responsibilities in relation to Data Protection are met as well as working with the secretariat’s management team to ensure full risk, health, safety and policy compliance

Experience required:

  • Company Secretary/Governance experience in public or not-for-profit sector
  • Degree level qualification, relevant governance qualification or equivalent
  • Understanding of the regulatory environment and legal requirements of the social housing sector
  • Line management experience

Skills, knowledge and expertise required:

  • An awareness of data protection legislation and its practical operational implications
  • Proficient in Board report writing and minute taking
  • Strong IT skills, especially Microsoft Office
  • Sound understanding of data protection legislation
  • ICSA qualification is highly desirable
  • Good understanding of Section 20 requirements and practises (Landlord and Tenants Act)
