Finance Roles Beyond the Basics: Exploring Specialised Positions

Back to Blogs

The finance sector, often perceived through the lens of conventional roles such as bankers, accountants, and financial analysts, holds a much broader spectrum of specialised positions. These niche roles cater to specific industry needs, requiring unique skill sets and offering distinct career paths. In this blog, Associate Director Puja Ladva, who leads our London Corporate Services division, explores some of these specialised finance positions, shedding light on what they entail and the qualifications necessary to pursue them.

1. Quantitative Analysts

Quantitative analysts, or "quants," are the mathematicians and statisticians of the finance world. They specialize in developing complex models that help in decision-making processes, such as assessing risk, pricing derivatives, and algorithmic trading. Quants usually hold advanced degrees in mathematics, physics, computer science, or engineering. Proficiency in programming languages like Python, R, or C++ is essential, as is a deep understanding of mathematical concepts such as stochastic calculus and linear algebra.

2. Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Specialists

As sustainability becomes a central concern for investors, the demand for ESG specialists in finance has surged. These professionals assess and integrate ESG criteria into investment decisions, helping firms to manage risks and identify opportunities related to sustainability. ESG specialists often have backgrounds in environmental science, social sciences, or sustainability studies, combined with a solid understanding of financial principles.

3. Compliance Analysts

In the complex web of financial regulations, compliance analysts ensure that financial institutions adhere to all laws and regulations. They monitor, analyse, and implement regulatory changes, conduct audits, and manage risk. A background in law, finance, or business, along with a detailed understanding of the regulatory environment, is crucial for this role. Certifications like the Certified Regulatory Compliance Manager (CRCM) can also be beneficial.

4. FinTech Developers

The intersection of finance and technology has created a burgeoning field for FinTech developers. These individuals design, develop, and implement innovative technological solutions to improve financial services. Skills in software development, cybersecurity, blockchain, and data analytics are paramount. A background in computer science or IT, combined with knowledge of financial markets, is ideal for aspiring FinTech developers.

5. Structured Finance Professionals

Structured finance involves complex financial instruments like collateralised debt obligations (CDOs) and mortgage-backed securities (MBS). Professionals in this field design, underwrite, and manage these securities, often requiring innovative thinking to solve financial and legal puzzles. A deep understanding of financial modeling, risk management, and legal aspects of finance is necessary, along with a degree in finance, economics, or a related field.

6. Behavioral Finance Analysts

At the crossroads of psychology and finance, behavioral finance analysts study how psychological influences and cognitive errors affect financial decisions and market outcomes. They apply this knowledge to improve financial products, investment strategies, and client advice. A background in psychology, behavioral economics, and finance, coupled with strong analytical skills, is essential for this role.

7. Cryptocurrency Analysts

As digital currencies and blockchain technology continue to evolve, cryptocurrency analysts have emerged as key players in analysing trends, investments, and regulatory implications of cryptocurrencies. They require a mix of skills in blockchain technology, digital security, market analysis, and a thorough understanding of cryptocurrency ecosystems.
