The Power of an Hour: 60 Minutes a Day to Reach Your Goal

Back to Blogs

We live in an ever-evolving world, with industry changing before our very eyes. Constantly growing and bettering yourself is an enviable quality to embody. The more you upgrade your skillset, the more likely you are to get that promotion you have been dreaming of, or retain your position amidst redundancies. It’s always a good idea to be on top of your game.

But how do you learn a new skillset from scratch? Try the ’60-minutes-a-day’ rule. If you choose to have one hour - uninterrupted - of learning something new, you are bound to make impressive progress. So how do you implement it?

Plan everything

The first step is to make a plan and set bite-sized goals for every step of the way. If you are planning on learning a new language for example, you might want to learn basic greetings in the first week then move on to numbers, colours and days of the week in the second. Plan it all out and set targets that you can hit - then you feel as if you are really progressing, rather than drifting aimlessly.

Consistency is key

Set up your learning for first thing in the morning and at the same time each day. You can’t procrastinate and put something off if you already did it first thing, right? Accomplishing early in the day is also a satisfying feeling and gives you the momentum to achieve more as the day goes on. So set a time and stick to it, every day.

Look after your health

The key to being a productive human being is looking after yourself to begin with. So if you exercise regularly, you’re oxygenating your body and you feel energised. If you meditate, then you are able to focus for long periods of time and little things seldom stress you out, allowing you to focus on solutions. It’s these habits that will directly affect whether you reach another milestone in your life. Stick with healthy habits and they will reward you.

Visualisation has the ability to give you motivation and inspiration when you have none. Say you want to learn public speaking: if you keep imagining yourself giving a presentation, feeling confident and excited to present rather than a nervous wreck, the feeling of being able to overcome your stage fright will propel you forward into achieving your goal. Keep envisioning exactly what you want and how you will get yourself there. Each time you experience a setback or difficulty, imagine how you will feel when you finally get what you want!

If you dedicate an hour every day for three months, you can transform your life. Having a growth mindset is the single most important thing we can choose. To know that we have infinite potential - and to capitalise on it - is immeasurably powerful. So resist the urge to scroll through your social media updates as soon as you wake up, and instead channel your energies into learning something that could better your future.
