Job description

Our client, based in Derbyshire, is currently recruiting for a Housing Standards Officer on a 13-week temporary contract.

The position is due to start immediately on a full-time basis. The hourly rate is negotiable based on experience for this position.

The ideal candidate will have the HHSRS qualification / certification and have experience of working in reactive Housing Enforcements. They will also have their own vehicle.

Duties will include (but are not limited to):

  • Identifying the cause of property defects and determining the most appropriate course of action to rectify the defect

  • Delivering improvements in housing standards in the private sector and to reduce the negative impact on health caused by poor housing conditions

  • Ensuring landlords in the private rented and social housing sectors meet their statutory obligations with regard to housing conditions

  • Responding to service requests regarding disrepair and poor housing conditions in the private and social rented sectors

  • Providing advice to landlords, tenants and property owners regarding housing conditions

  • Conducting inspections of properties to identify and determine the nature and cause of defects and to recommend appropriate remedial measures

  • Serving legal notices and when necessary prepare schedules of works requiring owners and landlords to rectify disrepair and housing defects

  • Obtaining quotations for work in default following service of statutory notices, inspect works in progress and on completion to ensure payments to contractors can be authorised

  • Preparing documentation to support legal proceedings and to attend court and give evidence when required

  • Carrying out inspections of licenced houses in multiple occupation in accordance with the council’s inspection programme

Experience required:

  • Experience of working in reactive Housing Enforcements

  • HHSRS qualification

Skills, knowledge and expertise required:

  • Risk assessment and management

  • Financial management and budgeting

  • Compliance and due diligence
