Role: Solution Architect

Salary: £45,000-£54,000

Working Arrangement: Fixed Term Contract Until August 2025

Location: Hybrid Working within a commutable distance from Birmingham 2-3 Days a week

This is a key role during an exciting time in the organisation as they are driving forwards a number of digital practices. This includes Digital Learning Technology, Augmented Reality, Networking and Architecture. The ideal candidate will have strong experience across Solution and Enterprise Architecture, O365, Cloud Technology (Ideally Azure). You will be responsible for mapping out the current state, and working on transitional steps along the way to reach the target state. Pivoting and changing direction regularly along the way managing stakeholder expectations and financial restraints.

Role Overview:

  • This is a critical technical lead role working closely with the Head of Architecture and with key stakeholders at various levels within ITS and the wider organisation to ensure the delivery of exceptional IT services. Using authorised Architecture Principles, Standards and Patterns and in line with the relevant Digital Strategy and Technology Roadmaps, the Solution Architect will be responsible for supporting the successful implementation of the new research information eco-system. The work will include designing, advising on and implementing an architecture that meets ITS governance standards, business requirements and fits within the time and budget envelopes of the project.

  • This role will work closely with academic and professional services colleagues to explore, define and implement the strategic roadmap for new learning technologies across the institution.

  • The post holder will have a good understanding of the Education Technology (EdTech) sector and will proactively assess existing and emerging products and technologies against current and future business requirements.

  • They will utilise their knowledge and judgement to prioritise stakeholder needs and manage expectations in accordance with institutional strategies and available resources - they will also influence these to better match the ever changing internal and external environments.

  • Reporting initially directly to the Head of Architecture and Design, this will be a key senior management position within IT Services, taking a leading part in the selection and delivery of the digital learning environments

Key Skills and Experience:

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent qualification in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent relevant education/experience plus substantial work experience in a relevant technical/scientific and/or management/supervisory role in a specialist area. A higher degree may also be held. Where no equivalent qualification is held a proven track record of extensive and substantial work experience in a series of progressively more demanding and relevant roles will be required.

  • TOGAF certification or equivalent relevant experience is desirable.

  • Proven technical specialist knowledge and understanding in a relevant technical area (specialists will require advanced technical expertise).

  • Demonstrable understanding of architectural frameworks and methodology.

  • Demonstrable broad technical and architectural background in all facets of IT, including applications, data, infrastructure, (including Private and Public cloud), network and integrations.

  • Risk identification, articulation, mitigation, and other risk management understanding.

  • Knowledge of Higher Education in general and its environment would be beneficial.

  • A background in software development or solution architecture with appropriate technology/ coding skills and experience.

  • A detailed understanding of Digital and Technology Strategies, open standards-based architecture and using APIs.

  • A broad technical background in IT, covering operating systems, databases, integrations, cloud-based Software/Platform/Infrastructure-as-a-Service, business continuity and information security.

  • An understanding of the application and software development life cycle.

  • An understanding of release and change management.

  • An understanding of Agile and Product-based development.

  • An understanding of ITIL Service Management practices, processes, and procedures.
