Job description

Our client, based in Northamptonshire, is currently recruiting for a Housing Advisor on a permanent basis. The position is due to start in September, offering both full-time and part-time options. The annual salary being offered is £29,000.

The ideal candidate will have experience working within a council as an advisor, as well as experience of making and/or challenging Section 184 and Section 202 decisions.

Duties will include (but are not limited to):

  • Providing quality advice to customers in high-risk situations, including risk of eviction

  • Managing a caseload of customers who enter the drop-in centre, keeping clear record of their situation

  • Assisting customers in completing application forms and other documents

  • Challenging Section 184 decisions which have been made by Local Authorities in relation to the Homeless Reduction Act 2017

  • Challenging Section 202 decisions

  • Signposting customers to additional support organisations to help maintain their tenancies

  • Provide advice on income maximisation through money, debt and welfare casework and representation

  • Advocate for vulnerable clients and provide advice on the judicial system, including hiring solicitors when appropriate

Experience required:

  • Section 184 decisions

  • Section 202 decisions

  • Proven experience of working within a housing/homelessness service, advice service and/or anti-poverty services

Skills, knowledge and expertise required:

  • Relevant qualification in Housing: (e.g. HND/NVQ Level) and/or Shelter A and B

  • Relevant qualification/course in Benefit advice (desirable)

  • Relevant qualification/course in Debt advice (desirable)

  • Certificated Course or qualification in Advice (desirable)

Working hours:

  • Full time – 37.5 hours per week

  • Part time – 20 hours per week

  • Monday – Friday, 9am-5pm, however can be flexible between 8:00am-6:00pm
