Ace Your Performance Review

Preparing for a performance review can be nerve wracking. Your efforts are put under the spotlight and if you’re not ready, it can feel like you’re being scrutinised and interrogated. But it doesn’t have to be this way. These pivotal moments can be powerful for advancing your career. So how do you channel excitement rather than dread? Read on…

Go over your job description

Reviewing your role and responsibilities is a great way to demonstrate how you are meeting your objectives. Go one further and list all of your extra tasks that aren’t related to your role. Exceeding expectations is guaranteed to impress. If you want to take your career to the next level, it’s time to step up to the challenge and show them you’re positively thriving in your current position!

Record your achievements

If you haven’t been keeping score then it’s time to do that right now. Record all of your accomplishments, positive feedback and moments of victory so you can proudly relay all you have done for the company. Have you lead an employee orientation? Helped a co-worker who was swamped with work? Or secured an important client? Say it! If you don’t toot your own horn, who will? No one! It’s on you to put your humility aside and be your biggest cheerleader.

Start the day right

Sleeping through your alarm, rushing out the door without breakfast, looking dishevelled… This is not the morning you want to be having on an important day. Give yourself ample time to make sure you are looking and feeling your best. If you’re nervous, then fit in some exercise and meditation. Wear something which makes you feel confident. And whatever you do, do not be late!

Look to the future

Don’t limit yourself to focusing on past achievements, let your boss know your plans for what’s ahead. Taking the time to cultivate personal and professional roles is an excellent way to differentiate yourself from the rest and shine a light on your potential. Thinking about taking up a new course or training for a marathon? Do it! By continually working on yourself and improving, you can ace your review and be in line to get promoted too.

All done? It’s not over yet! Make sure you understand what’s expected of you and how to pursue your goals, going forward. Ask for constructive feedback and use it as an opportunity to grow. So, turn those nerves into excitement and recognise that a performance review is a big opportunity to propel you into an exciting future.
