2020 – Make it Your Best Year Yet
The new year is an excellent time to banish the old and welcome in the new. To shed the skin of the person you were, and give yourself an upgrade. It’s not just a new year, it’s a new decade! The time is ripe for reinventing yourself and stepping into the shoes of who you’ve always wanted to be. So how do you make this year stand out from the rest? How do you take your career to the next level?
Reassess 2019: the good, the bad, and the ugly
First and foremost, go back. Take a trip down memory lane and revisit what went down last year. Ponder your biggest accomplishments in the workplace, as well as why they meant so much to you. What were your biggest obstacles? Do you have any regrets or anything you wish you could change? Maybe you lost your cool with a co-worker or perhaps you procrastinated like hell and everything was always a last-minute rush job.
Put your best face forward in the workplace
Care about the way you present yourself to the world. Always running late? Desk forever messy? Constantly pushing the boundaries with work attire? Or maybe you love to complain and criticise with your work buddies? These are not enviable qualities. People take notice of what you’re doing – more than you think. When you get home, feel free to do whatever you please. But while you’re at work, treat it seriously and, in turn, you will be taken seriously.
Forget New Year’s resolutions, it’s all about your 2020 GOALS
Resolutions are like drunken promises: all talk and no action. Goals are more concrete, more real. It’s also important to start taking action immediately. By all means plan, but it’s more important to keep things moving on a daily basis. Schedule something in the diary to aim for. If your goal is to give better presentations, then enter yourself into a public speaking competition. Nothing like a bit of pressure to push you towards achieving something you once thought impossible. Check out our article all about new year goals.
Choose progress over perfection
The magic is always in the details. If you’re looking to get a promotion, you need to step up your game and get noticed. Start by volunteering to take charge of projects, actively help and mentor those around you, bring fresh ideas to the table in meetings. It’s all of the small wins that can assist in leading you to where you want to be. It’s not about the destination, it’s who you become on the journey getting there.
So don’t let the year unravel by simply reacting to what happens around you. It’s up to you to take the reins and actively plan how this year will turn out. Get yourself a journal and write down (in meticulous detail) what you hope December 2020 will look like. Then work your way backwards and plan how you’ll get there. Run the year, before the year runs you.
